Bless you! I found the error: I had downloaded the .tar.gz file to a FAT32 usb flash drive and also unpacked the executable there :D so the file couldn’t be made executable nor was it ever executable on the fat32 drive. When I moved it to the Raspbian desktop (ext4) making the megatools file executable worked and now everything seems to work , even the new mega.nz url format :)

so helpful because trying to download stuff with Firefox on raspberry pi 2, Firefox just freezes the system after a few seconds :D so megatools as a small commandline tool is really a savior here.
